20 mph: You need to follow this speed when travelling through areas with more rush like residential areas, town centres and other urban areas. In these areas, there is majority of pedestrians and in order to avoid any collisions, it becomes necessary to stick to the speed limit.

Temporary restrictions: These are applied when a kind of repair work is in progress on any of the roads. This is done in order to make the roads safe for pedestrians and the people working there. The speed limit is made visible by putting up various symbols and signs.

If you do not stick to the speed limits, there is a possibility that you will be fined. The penalties generally are according to the offence committed. You will be fined £60 and given 3 penalty points. If the offence is more serious, fine can extend up to £2500. You can even be disqualified.
