Speed Limits

Driving is a pleasurable activity for many but still there are a few considerations that need to be taken care of whilst driving. Keeping check on speed limits is one of those major considerations.

There is always a risk of emergencies that may force you to stop your car immediately. If you are speeding, it might be difficult to slow down quickly and this may lead to your car hitting any object or person on the road. The driving speed depends upon the kind of road and the area where you are. You need to be aware what speed is permissible in which area.

Here is a list of speed limits and the places where they are used:

National speed limit: This sign for the speed limit is a white board with a diagonal white black stripe. The national speed for most of the vehicles on single carriageways is 60mph and on dual carriageways it is 70 mph.

40 and 50 mph: This speed is considered to be safe in areas which comply with higher speeds. The sign boards are put repeatedly on the roads to inform drivers.

30 mph: The roads where you need to adhere to this speed limit are mostly characterised by a lining of street lights. Most of the roads with street lights follow this speed only. But keep in mind that there are roads with street lights that have a different speed limit. You can look at the boards put up on the roads to verify.

20 mph: You need to follow this speed when travelling through areas with more rush like residential areas, town centres and other urban areas. In these areas, there is majority of pedestrians and in order to avoid any collisions, it becomes necessary to stick to the speed limit.

Temporary restrictions: These are applied when a kind of repair work is in progress on any of the roads. This is done in order to make the roads safe for pedestrians and the people working there. The speed limit is made visible by putting up various symbols and signs.

If you do not stick to the speed limits, there is a possibility that you will be fined. The penalties generally are according to the offence committed. You will be fined £60 and given 3 penalty points. If the offence is more serious, fine can extend up to £2500. You can even be disqualified.
