Head Injury Types

Generally the different head injury types are classified on the basis of severity and the exact location of injury. As far as the severity is concerned, it may range from the mild concussion to a severe injury which may result in the death of the victim.

While for the location, the head injury may be in a specific area of brain which is known as a focal injury, or it can also be a diffuse injury which is more widespread.

If the person’s head is subjected to an external force, this may result in the damaging of the external skull, skin or even underlying brain. An external force which is exerted over the victims head is enough for the displacement and the fracture of the skull. Such injury is termed as an open head injury where there is penetration of the skull. In contrast in a closed head injury, there is brain damage but no penetration of the skull.

It should be taken into consideration that these head injury types can further be classified into various categories. This includes concussion which is known as the most minor and common form of head injury. Concussion basically refers to the temporary loss of consciousness of the victim in response to the head injury.

It also includes contusion which is bruising to the brain. This is represented as the particular region of the brain which is swollen and is mixed with blood. The skull’s inner surface is rough and therefore the friction which is caused due to the movement of the brain can result in the brain injury.

Another type of injury is the coup contrecoup which is basically a form of contusion. The bruises here are present on either side of the brain. It can also lead to the damaging of neurons.
