 There are many causes of asthma but in the case of Occupational asthma the source is substances such as dust, fumes or gases which exist in the workplace and can be inhaled by workers who are exposed to them. Existing asthma with another cause can be aggravated by exposure to such substances.

Asthma creates difficulty in the transmission of air to the lungs due to inflammation, narrowing and tightening of the airways. Excessive mucus may be produced in the airways worsening the problem further. Eventually the condition will produce symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and a persistent cough.

Asthma can develop days, months or even many years after exposure to hazardous substances and this latency is common in Occupational Asthma. Sometimes the condition develops years later when the sufferer is no longer working in a situation where he is exposed to risk.
