There are a number of things which you should do after an accident - some legal and some which are advisable to facilitate either making or defeding any possible claim resulting from the accident. Fortunately most accidents are relatively minor collisions between two vehicles and do not result in injury. However they can cause difficulties later so it is important to do as much as possible to avoid this:-

1. Always stop after an accident - it is a serious offence to fail to do so if injury or damage has occurred.
2. Assuming that neither you or your passengers are injured establish that no one in the other vehicle is
3. Take a note of the registration number, make, model and colour of the other vehicle
4. Exchange details with the other party - names, addresses, telephone numbers and (if known) insurance details
5. Check that the driver is the owner of the vehicle - if not obtain details of the owner
6. Make a note of the area and extent of damage to both vehicles. Take photographs if possible
7. Take the names, addresses, telephone numbers and registration numbers of any witnesses
8. Note the exact location, positions of vehicles, distances, tyre marks etc. Again take photographs if possible. Your insurers make ask you to make a sketch
9. Notify the police. They will not normally attend minor accidents where there is no injury but it is worth telephoning just in case. You should certainly notify them if you have any difficulty in obtaning details from the other party
10. Avoid discussing liability if possible and do not make any admissions as this could cause problems with your insurers
11. Notify your insurers as soon as possible. If you delay you may be in breach of a policy condition and invalidate your policy
