Deceleration and Whiplash

Whiplash injuries usually occur  to the neck or the cervical vertebrae and are also referred to as Acute Soft Tissue Neck Sprains. Whenever these injuries take place, the muscles, the tendons and the ligaments, which are the soft tissues of the body, get stretched beyond their normal range of natural motion.

The muscles and ligaments of the neck and the cervical vertebrae contract in order to prevent the extra motion thereby actually protecting the victim from any further possible harm. These harms can include neck fractures and severe spinal cord injuries. It is not necessary that the whiplash injury surfaces at the very point of the accident. That is, in most of the cases, whiplash injuries appear after some time has lapsed. Generally, it takes a couple of days for the whiplash symptoms to arise in the victim. The pain and suffering from the incurred injury starts materializing in the days that follow and the inflammation and the bruising of the area of the neck tissues takes some time to develop fully.

Recovering from deceleration and whiplash injuries can be aided by using the medication prescribed by the doctor, cold compress and mobility exercises. With thorough observation by medical practitioners, most of these injuries are not very severe and thus can be easily dealt with if the victim performs the mobility exercises, takes proper medicines and gets the treatment of cold compress well in time. These not so severe deceleration and whiplash injuries certainly do cause discomfort to the victims, though for a shorter duration. The injuries incurred on the facet joints or on the cervical disks are usually quite serious and need attention.

Most commonly, the deceleration and whiplash injuries are caused due to the very impulsive movement of the head or the neck of the victim. This sudden impulsive movement of the head results in rebounding or an instant forceful jerk and occurs often in road traffic collisions. These road accidents of deceleration and whiplash injuries result in considerable damage to little infants who can face traumas, haemorrhages, impairments and contusions on the cervical cord or neurological seizures due to the sudden jerks. Adults can face chronic problems like tingling of the arms, headaches, fatigue, reduced libido  and insomniac difficulties. At times, these problems may develop for the entire lifetime of the victim.
