Whiplash Treatments

A Whiplash injury takes place when the soft tissues of the spine are strained and stretched when the body is suddenly thrown with a forceful jerk. Car crashes are the most common occurrences of whiplash injuries which involve sudden deceleration, other strenuous activities like diving can also strain the spine causing the injury. Most common complaints during whiplash injury include stiffed neck, headache and pain in the back of head. These whiplash symptoms are apparent within the 2 days of the accident, and usually may take some days and even weeks to recover. In some cases, the patient may also experience loss of memory or unconsciousness.

There are no single methods of whiplash treatments that are widely accepted by all the doctors and physicians. Within the first day of the injury, the injured person should apply an ice bag to the neck which will relieve the sense of inflammation to a great extent. Bags full of frozen peas also make good ice packs as they are able to mould to the body. Normal pain killers can also be used, but if all these activities remain ineffective, there is need to consult a general physician or a doctor. There are also some physical exercises that can be extremely effective in the treatment of whiplash injury. The most considerable thing is that a whiplash injury cannot be diagnosed in a CT scan, an X-ray or an MRI scan, but is done on the basis of the patient’s description of his or her problems and background of the injury. An X-ray can also be conducted if there is doubt of fracture or dislocation of the spine. Patients who have acute pain in their cervical region are suggested to start the neck exercises as early as possible, so that they can get out of their bed within 2-3 days.

However, there are very good chances of complete recovery, its aftermaths can last for even a couple of months, thus affecting the entire daily routine of the injured person. Some people may even develop a whiplash syndrome, which means that the injured person may suffer from continual pain and headache, reduced neck movement, tingling in arms, fatigue, disruptions in sleep, reduced libido and lumbar pains. The methods of whiplash treatments are difficult, as their aim is prevention of any further strains and encouragement of a quick recovery to the normal every day routine. Therefore, making a compensation claim is quite reasonable if the whiplash injury that you have suffered was caused due to someone else’s mistake and ignorance.
